Merchandising in Mexico by Marisol Alpízar

As in the whole world, Candy Candy had a great success in Mexico. The first anime rebroadcast was aproximatly in 1984, but until 1987 I didin't see it. Since that time I try to collect all the Candy Canty things I find.

-Books & Manga-

Bruguera published in Mexico two series of three book each one. The first series are books with 160 pages, divided in five chapters.

The second series are book of 320 pages, for the first and second tomo, with 10 chapters each one, while the third one has 192 pages with 6 chapters.

Until the middle of the '90's in Mexico, some Manga-Anime shops were open and the consecuent conventions.

Then it was possible to get the Candy Candy's manga. The first ones, which were sold, were the ones of the 6 books series, shortly after the 9 books collection was brought. While a time it was impossible to get this material, but now it's possible to get more easily the 9 books collection.

-Paper shop goods-

This bag could be got in a shop, which was owned by a japanese family at the end of the '80's. I have never seen it again.

Kay trademark, 50x40x10cm, made of transparent plastic, not very resistant.
The image shows Candy in summer, with sailing clothes and Pony's Home behind.

These cases were sold in a shop by departments in April '91.

The test says Candy, although the ilustrations are Lady Georgie's.

These pencils were able to get in 1988, very cheap.
The image shows Candy with a bird and Annie paying with Clint.
From Korea, 0.5 size and only in purple colour.

-Collections and Magazines-

In 1996 this cards were sold; they mix images of Lady Georgie y Candy again.

They were sold one by one, not in a paquet; I don't know how many they were, I know 18. The prisma side is a sticker, and the other side is a card
In this time they're difficult to get.

In 1998 this colletion of 50 cards were sold, numbered on the back side.
The folio image is alwas the same, and in the other side there are different Candy images with all of her friends and not so friends.

At the end of the 80's stickers were sold, with lots of anime characters. Candy only appeared in only one sticker of .5x.5 cm size.

Colletionable sticker album, it appeared in 1998, when it was about to finish Mexican Candy Candy rebroadcasting.

In some anime magazines, the series is named a lot of times. Besides, in 2001 a magazine appeared, including a CD full of things taken from the internet.
In the number 27, year 3, the Spanish magazine Dokan, Candy Candy appears as a manga recommendation.

This poster is from the Animedia magazine #2 February '97, p39 where it talks about th Toei. in its 40 anniversary (1956-1996). In that year the best represetant of its anime were Sailor Moon Super S andDragon Ball GT; but in the image there are all the memorable characters, Queen Emeralda, Mazzinger Z, Kimba, etc including Candy, with the clothe she wore when she was working at the Leegan's.

-Curiosities and other things-

-Candy Candy has been rebroadcasted about 7 times in Mexico:
1984
March to September '87
30 September '87 to March '88 In this time, the 114th chapter wasn't rebroadcasted, due to the presidential elections. The Gray Tamp chapters were put from the 15th minute, including the commercials.
July 18th '94 to 6th of January '95 when the rebroadcasting continued until '98.

-Lady Georgie haven't rebroadcasted in Mexico.

-In some articles from the "Conexión Manga" magazine, the following things are mentioned:
Candy is the queen of the suffering Lolitas (CM # 26 page 18)
Eliza is a villain Lolita (CM # 28, pages 18-19)
Terry is s vulnerable galant (CM # 30, pag 19), and Anthony is the perfect gallant(CM # 31 p 18)

-During the 80's there was a comical publication "for adults" called "Video risa", in which many famous series in Mexico were parodied. In these parodies Candy was included, and in a "crossover" between Anime heroines and a USA tv series, one of the girls which were recued from a psyco was Candy. (CM # 36 p29)

-The Leegan mansion is in Sun Valley, and Pony's Home is in the Porte Indiana.

-While in Japan there was a judge for the Candy Candy rigths, in Mexico an enterprise was thinking about the idea of selling the series, in VHS format in the newstores every 15 days.

-The " Conexión Manga" magazine, in its number 42 it did a list of the 10 incoherences of Candy:
1 The everlasting pigtails hairdo.
2 Sister Pony nor Sister Mary grow old.
3 "It sounds like a group of snails crawling" as nonsense sentence.
4 If in USA in the early 20th century there were stricts adoption codes, why Candy is an abused girl?
5 Albert seemed God -he knew everything-, besides he was a hippie and he didn't take care of Candy
6 Terry didn't go back with Candy, after Sussana killed herself, he quits theatre and starts to drink.
7 Albert y his Snow-white complex, because the animals always follow him.
8 Candy always sees Hill's Princes.
9 The characters seem clons.
10 Candy always said her brooch belonged to the Leegans, and it had inscribed W.A.

Personal comments:The author of this article and I didn't saw and read different series or we didn't know the same story. I defer in MANY things.
